Obverse Design

The obverse features Martin Jennings' official portrait of King Charles III, first introduced on Royal Mint coins in 2023. The right-facing effigy carries the inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 2 POUNDS". As an ongoing annual issue, the 2026 Britannia represents the current and definitive King Charles III era of Royal Mint silver bullion.

Reverse Design

The reverse showcases the iconic seated Britannia — a long-standing symbol of British strength and stability — incorporating advanced security features including animated surface waves and a latent image anti-counterfeiting device. These security innovations, introduced progressively since 2021, have established the Silver Britannia series as one of the most secure and authenticated bullion coins in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2026 Silver Britannia CGT-free?

Yes. The Silver Britannia is UK legal tender with a face value of £2, making gains on its sale exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. See our CGT-free coins guide for full details.

Is VAT payable on the Silver Britannia?

Yes. Unlike investment gold, silver bullion is subject to UK VAT at 20%. This applies to all silver coins and bars regardless of their CGT status. The CGT exemption and VAT liability are separate — the Britannia is VAT-applicable but CGT-free.

How much silver is in the 2026 Silver Britannia?

The 2026 Silver Britannia contains exactly 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of .999 fine silver — the standard specification for the Britannia series since 1997.

What security features does the Silver Britannia have?

The current Silver Britannia series incorporates animated surface waves visible as the coin is tilted, a latent image anti-counterfeiting device, and micro-text detailing. These features make it exceptionally difficult to counterfeit and simple to authenticate without specialist equipment.

Is the Silver Britannia a good investment for UK buyers?

The Silver Britannia is the most tax-efficient way for UK investors to hold physical silver — CGT-free as legal tender, with Royal Mint quality and strong global liquidity. Its main drawback vs gold is that VAT applies on purchase, increasing the initial cost. For investors primarily focused on silver, it remains the benchmark choice.
