The pre-owned 2023 King Charles III Coronation Silver 1oz coin marks one of the most significant royal occasions in recent history — the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey on 6th May 2023. Struck by The Royal Mint from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this commemorative £2 coin combines investment appeal with genuine royal heritage. As UK legal tender, it is CGT-exempt for UK residents. Read: How to Invest in Silver for Beginners and New vs Pre-Owned Bullion.

Obverse Design

The obverse features the first official coinage portrait of King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings, showing a right-facing effigy of the King with the inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 2 POUNDS". This portrait — introduced across Royal Mint coins in 2023 — marks a historic transition in British coinage and will define the Charles III era of UK bullion.

Reverse Design

The reverse carries a dedicated Coronation commemorative design featuring the Royal Arms and Coronation imagery, marking the 6th May 2023 ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The coin was issued specifically to commemorate this historic occasion, giving it both numismatic significance and a fixed place in the record of British royal history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2023 King Charles III Coronation coin CGT-free?

Yes. The coin is UK legal tender with a face value of £2, making it exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. See our CGT-free coins guide for full details.

What condition are the pre-owned coins?

Pre-owned coins have been previously owned and may show light cosmetic imperfections such as minor surface marks, milk spots, or natural toning. These are entirely normal for pre-owned silver bullion and have no impact on silver content, purity, or investment value. Read: New vs Pre-Owned Bullion.

Is the 2023 Coronation coin a good investment?

It offers CGT-free, VAT-advantaged exposure to physical silver with the added appeal of being a one-time commemorative issue tied to a specific historic event. Coronation coins often retain collector interest beyond their silver value, particularly in well-preserved condition. For purely bullion-focused investment, a standard Silver Britannia may offer a tighter premium to spot.

What is the significance of the King Charles III portrait?

The 2023 Coronation issue was among the first coins to bear Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III — the first new monarch on British coinage since 1952. As the inaugural coinage year of a new reign, 2023 issues carry particular historical interest for collectors building a Royal Mint date run.

How does this coin compare to the Silver Britannia?

Both are Royal Mint .999 fine silver 1oz coins and CGT-free UK legal tender. The Silver Britannia is an annual bullion issue with consistent design and very high liquidity. The 2023 Coronation coin is a one-time commemorative with greater collector appeal but potentially smaller secondary market depth. For most investors, Britannias are the primary silver holding; Coronation coins suit those who value the numismatic dimension. See: Silver Coins vs Silver Bars.
