Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 20g gold bar VAT-free?

Yes. Investment gold bars of 999.9 purity are VAT-exempt in the UK under HMRC's investment gold exemption. This applies regardless of the refinery. See our Gold Purity Guide for more on what qualifies as investment gold.

Which refinery will my 20g bar be from?

As a Best Value listing, the specific refinery is selected from current stock and may include Valcambi Suisse, PAMP Suisse, Heraeus, Umicore, Metalor, Perth Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, or The Royal Mint (UK). All are LBMA-recognised refiners of the highest international standing. If you require a specific brand, please contact our team before ordering.

Why choose 20g rather than a smaller or larger bar?

The 20g bar sits between the fractional 5g–10g bars (higher premium per gram, easier entry) and the 1oz (31.1g) or 50g–100g bars (lower premium per gram, larger capital outlay). It offers a practical mid-point: a meaningful holding at a manageable price, with good liquidity. Read: Gold Bars by Size: Which Should You Buy?

Is a 20g gold bar CGT-free?

No. Gold bars are not UK legal tender and are therefore subject to Capital Gains Tax on any profit made upon sale. If CGT exemption is important to you, consider a CGT-free UK legal tender gold coin such as the Gold Sovereign or Gold Britannia instead.

How is the bar authenticated?

Every bar we supply comes with official assay certification and secure tamper-evident packaging from the refinery. We additionally carry out professional XRF testing on pre-owned stock to verify weight and purity independently before dispatch.
